A good place to start would be a general purpose programming language book. Could your ++ have been in the title of, "The C++ Programming Language", which is written by the same author as the advertized book? One more vote for Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++. Like its predecessors, the fourth edition uses clear, straightforward examples to teach both the syntax of the C++ language and sound programming principles. Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++; Addison-Wesley Professional; 1 edition (December 29, 2008); The C++ Programming Language by Bjarne Stroustrup; Addison-Wesley Pub Co; 3rd edition (February 15, 2000). An Introduction to Programming by the Inventor of C++ Planning for Programming in the Genuine Entire world. Another good c++ book(which I haven't read, assuming it's good because of the author) is Programming:Principles and Practice Using c++, it's written by Bjarne Stroustrup(the creator of c++). After you finish it (and by finishing I mean learn it and do all the drills and exercises), I highly recommend The C++ Standard Library by Nicolai Josuttis. Seems like this is a very practical book. Just started reading this book by none other than Stroustrup, the father of C++. C++ or Java would be good (I particularly like "Programming Principles and Practice Using C++" by Bjarne Stroustrup). People who have programming experience can begin learning C++ from this, but take a look before buying. (how do you pronounce his name?!). ISBN: 0-201-70073-5; Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++, by Bjarne Stroustrup. For example, my latest paper (IEEE Computer, January 2012) is about programming techniques for infrastructure and my latest book ("Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++") is focussed on technique and style.
